HowlRound Theatre Commons

Part of the Office of the Arts at Emerson College in Boston, HowlRound Theatre Commons is a free knowledge-sharing platform for theatre makers all over the world, offering tools and resources through an online journal and livestream talks, among other programs.

Originally launched as an online journal as part of the American Voices New Play Institute (AVNPI) at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., HowlRound evolved into a commons-inspired information-sharing platform. They offer tools and resources, created by and shared with theatre artists – like podcast series on topics like theatre creation and teaching theatre; essays on various issues impacting theatre; panel series on the current state and future of theatre production; and more. And they amplify and support under-represented voices and issues in theatre, such as with Latinx Theatre Commons.

What we like about this organization

We love HowlRound’s vision of collaboration, connection and free information-sharing – with an eye on the equitable access to resources and power in theatre practice, as well as global justice and sustainability. We appreciate that they’re especially mindful of those voices and issues that have been largely left out of theatre practice and production. And it’s inspiring to see the theatre community coming together to share knowledge and expertise.

Diversity of thought and practice are vital to the continued health and well-being of artists and their art – and it’s so important for artists to have equitable access to knowledge and resources, especially as technology is increasingly influencing and impacting performing arts practice. We love how HowlRound puts the artists at centre of it all. (Written by C.M.)
