Learn to press your own poem in this special two-day workshop

Curious about printmaking, letterpress & poetry? On Saturday, April 26 and Sunday, April 27, 2025 Upstart & Crow, a creative studio and literary incubator, partners with New Leaf Editions, a print studio and gallery, for a special hands-on, two-day workshop in which attendees transform a short poem into print form. Only six spots available!

Bring a poem, learn to press it – and keep it forever

In this two-day workshop you’ll learn the essentials of letterpress, including inking and printing techniques, how to set your own type, and how to operate the press yourself. The end result will be a broadsheet* with your chosen, short poem to take home – and, very possibly, a fascination for this beautiful and meditative art form.

Attendees are welcome to attend the short poem workshop with Elee Kraljii Gardiner on Tuesday, April 22 free of charge to write their poem first, though having attended this workshop is not mandatory.

About Upstart & Crow

Upstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator on Granville Island in Vancouver, BC. They champion writers, readers and stories, and the role they play in shaping our lives. They develop original programs, support artists and revel in creative projects focused on literature in translation, climate solutions, poetry, civic dialogue, and community- and skills-building – all with the aim of elevating the role of literature and storytelling in our lives.

About New Leaf Editions

New Leaf Editions is a collaborative print studio and gallery on Granville Island in Vancouver, BC. Since its inception in 1986 by printmaker Peter Braune, it has produced works for some of Canada’s greatest contemporary artists, including Bill Reid, Robert Bateman, Rebecca Belmore, Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun and Susan Point. Today, New Leaf offers custom etchings, collaborative printmaking experiences and explorations of image-making with print media.

* Combining poetry, illustration, design and printmaking, a broadsheet is a large sheet of paper with a poem printed on it.
