of desperate ambition, dark dealings & horrific consequences.

The Veil

From Wednesday, September 17 to Sunday, October 19, 2025 – Thought For Food Productions, in association with Crow’s Theatre and Guild Festival Theatre, presents the world premiere of The Veil at Crow’s Theatre as part of Crow’s 2025/26 season. Inspired by classic horror writers like Edgar Allan Poe and Shirley Jackson, this haunting new work tells the tale of a high-powered lawyer who inherits a sinister curse.

Our darkest secrets hide just behind the veil

The Veil is a gripping monologue play that follows a young lawyer whose career is faltering as he struggles to make ends meet. Desperate for success, he strikes a sinister deal in exchange for wealth and status. Driven by his relentless ambition, he must confront a terrifying truth: sometimes, the deadliest adversary is the one we’ve created within ourselves.

As his fortunes rise, dark forces creep into his life, but it is only when his daughter is endangered that he realizes the true cost of his ambition. Every terrible deed he’s ever committed stirs to life – and lurks just beyond his sight. As reality blurs into nightmare, The Veil spirals into a pulse-quickening race against time, exposing the guilty and inescapable ghosts of our past.

“This is the kind of show that must be theatre. The story that Keith and Thomas have created can only work when the audience is sharing space with the performer and with each other.”

– Tyler J. Seguin, GFT Co-Artistic Director

Developed through Guild Festival Theatre’s (GFT) In Conversations With Classics Workshop, Governor General’s Literary Award nominee Keith Barker (This Is How We Got Here) and award-winning theatre creator Thomas Morgan Jones (Artistic Director, National Theatre School of Canada) bring a haunting new work, inspired by the eerie imagery of classic horror, to Crow’s Theatre.

Directed by Thought For Food Artistic Director and GFT Co-Artistic Director Helen Juvonen, The Veil stars Dora Award-winning actor Byron Abalos, who makes his return to the stage after several years working in television and film, including roles in Murdoch Mysteries, Coroner and The Boys.

“Just reading this script gives me shivers. Anyone who loves classic horror needs to experience this play.”

– Helen Juvonen, Director
