Three days, four shows – from Friday, November 28 to Sunday, November 30, 2025 – The FLATO Academy Theatre presents A Christmas Story: The Musical. Based on the classic holiday movie, this high-energy musical features exceptional local talent and live music – and promises to be the highlight of the Christmas season in Kawartha Lakes!
You’ll shoot your eye out!
Based on the beloved 1983 film – which is based on Jean Shepherd’s book In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash – A Christmas Story: The Musical follows young Ralphie Parker as he dreams of the perfect Christmas gift: an official Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-Shot Range Model Air Rifle.
Narrated by author Jean, we step back into 1940s Indiana for one unforgettable Christmas. Despite constant warnings from adults that “You’ll shoot your eye out,” Ralphie schemes to convince his parents, his teacher – and even Santa Claus himself – that this BB gun is the ultimate gift.
Meanwhile, the Parker family faces their own holiday adventures: Ralphie’s father, “The Old Man,” wins a mysterious “major award” in the form of a tacky leg lamp that horrifies Ralphie’s mother; Ralphie’s little brother Randy struggles to face the winter cold; and school bullies, triple-dog dares and a disastrous visit to the department store Santa add to the mayhem. In the end, Ralphie discovers that Christmas is about more than just the gift you want most – it’s about family, tradition and the magic of the holiday season.
Big fun for the whole family that you won’t want to miss!
The story unfolds with a mix of humour, warmth and nostalgia, featuring lively songs and big musical numbers highlighting Ralphie’s vivid imagination – turning his daydreams of cowboy heroics, dazzling gifts and epic triumphs into full-blown showstoppers. Packed with heart, this musical reminds us of the joy and chaos of the season.
With book by Joseph Robinette, and music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, this FLATO Academy Theatre production is directed by Beth Wilson, with pit band directors Lynne Davis and Chris Mabee leading a band of local talented musicians. About the FLATO Academy Theatre
The FLATO Academy Theatre was built in the spring of 1892 – and, when it opened its doors in 1893, it was billed as the most technically perfect theatre in Canada. With seating for 900 people, there was one balcony and one dress circle, with VIP boxes on either side of the stage. It was in this theatre that Canadian-born stage and silent film Marie Dressler made her first stage appearance at the age of five, in an amateur play organized by her mother. As part of the vaudeville circuit in the early 1900s, the Academy hosted a young Sammy Davis Jr. and the Marx Brothers. Falling on hard times in the 1950s, competing with the local movie theatre, the theatre was revived in the 1960s, presenting theatre and music performances, including Kawartha Summer Theatre and Canadian country music legend Tommy Hunter. Today, a small, dedicated staff and management team work behind the scenes to ensure that every show, event and experience runs smoothly – and the theatre remains a vibrant hub for arts and culture in the community.
