An unexpected bond An unexpected bond

Four unlikely companions, thrown together in a fragile time & place.

Crow’s Theatre presents: A Fine Balance

From Tuesday, August 25 to Sunday, October 11, 2026 – Crow’s Theatre presents the world premiere of A Fine Balance, a new stage adaptation of Rohinton Mistry’s beloved, award-winning novel exploring resilience and injustice during India’s 1975 Emergency.

Mistry’s powerful story comes to life on stage

In a cramped Bombay apartment turned illegal garment factory, four unlikely companions are thrown together. As the political crisis deepens and the country reels under an authoritarian crackdown, this fragile household becomes a refuge – and an unexpected bond begins to take hold.

As devastating as it is humane, A Fine Balance, Anosh Irani – Governor General’s Literary Award finalist and recipient of the Writers’ Trust Engel Findley Award – vividly brings Mistry’s powerful story to the stage. Directed by Crow’s Theatre by Artistic Director Chris Abraham, the cast features Husein Madhavji, Anand Rajaram, Zorana Sadiq, Siddharth Sharma, Sugith Varughese and Ben Yoganathan.

Accolades for the novel A Fine Balance
  • Giller Prize, 1995
  • Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Fiction, 1996
  • Oprah’s Book Club, November 2001
  • Commonwealth Writers’ Prize, 1996
