A classic dark comedy A classic dark comedy

about the only thing more deadly than poison: family.

On stage: Arsenic and Old Lace

From Friday, July 18 to Sunday, July 27, 2025 – Calliope Sound Productions presents the stage version of the classic comedy Arsenic and Old Lace, running at the University of Toronto, Mississauga’s Erindale Studio Theatre. The Brewster Sisters present as caring old ladies – but they have a dark secret! This, combined with the hilarious antics of their three nephews and the local constabulary, make for a wonderful play that will surely make you laugh.

The classic 1939 dark comedy on stage

Mortimer Brewster’s engagement announcement is upended when he discovers a corpse in his elderly aunts’ window seat. Between his aunts’ strange behaviour, a brother who thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt, and another brother using plastic surgery to hide from the police – not to mention Mortimer’s own hesitancy about marriage – it’ll be a miracle if Mortimer makes it to his wedding!

The play was written by American playwright Joseph Kesselring in 1939 (and later adapted into a film in 1944 and again in 1969); Tony Junor directs the Calliope Sound Productions presentation. The cast features Sumer Seth, Cheryl McClennan, Cynthia Ulba, Sammy Allouba, Evan Williams, Robin Sadavoy, Theodore McClennan, Michael Marando, Robert MacFarlane, Arron E Smaller, Ric Thorpe, Dale Cogswell and Lori Koenen.
