A play that pokes fun

at the over-the-top drama of Jacobean theatre in England.

Play reading: The Knight of the Burning Pestle

A one-day-only staged reading

A grocer and his wife crash a production of a citizen comedy at a boys theatre in London, demanding a much different production: of knights and adventure, starring their apprentice, Rafe.

Shakespeare BASH’d closes its 2023/24 season on Sunday, April 7, 2024 at The Monarch Tavern with a one-day-only staged reading of Francis Beaumont’s The Knight of the Burning Pestle from 1607, a musical metatheatrical comedy that pulls back the curtain on the theatrical presentation of Jacobean England (known for over-the-top tragedies, infused with dark humour) in various amusing and ridiculous ways.

The Dream Team cast, featuring familiar BASH’d faces

The one-day-only staged reading features longtime BASH’d collaborators David Mackett (Fly on the Wall Theatre) and Lesley Robertson (The Diddlin’ Bibbles) as the Citizen and his Wife, and Luke Kimball (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Mirvish) as their apprentice Rafe.

They are joined by Max Ackerman (Red Sandcastle Theatre, Rose Theatre), Will Carr (The Grove Theatre), Kyle Claeys (Statistics, Shifting Ground Collective), Sofía Contal (Carousel Players, Theatre Aquarius), Bailey Green (Cymbeline, The Comedy of Errors, BASH’d), Rianna Persaud (‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore, BASH’d), Alyssa Pothier (Panoply Theatre Collective), Adriano Reis (Martyr, ARC Stage) and Deivan Steele (Shakespeare in Action, Shakespeare By the Sea, BASH’d).

About Shakespeare BASH’d

A “Bash” is a crushing blow.

It can be powerful and done with passion.

It can be about making an attempt, going at it all on your own.

It can also be a wild night.

Shakespeare BASH’d is an artist-driven initiative that seeks to make classical theatre welcoming, inviting and social. They seek to synthesize the classical with the modern, to look at the plays from a place of curiosity, joy, investigation, truth and love. They present staged readings and full productions of seldom-seen plays by Shakespeare and his contemporaries in casual, social settings and intimate theatre venues, creating an engaging, entertaining and accessible storytelling experience for audiences.
