Riot King Art Market presents: The Moors

From Friday, April 3 to Sunday, April 19, 2026: Riot King Art Market presents the Toronto premiere of The Moors by Jen Silverman, a Victorian Gothic-inspired dark comedy about love, desperation and the dangerous results of yearning for too long to be seen. Presented at The Theatre Centre’s BMO Incubator.

Why has she been summoned to this strange, savage place?

Emilie, a young governess, arrives at a mysterious manor on the remote moors of England after exchanging many letters with the master of the house. But when the door opens, she finds that the only residents are his spinster sisters, a maid (or is it two maids?) and a lovelorn mastiff pining for a far-flung moorhen. With, apparently, no child in the house to care for, she’s left to wonder why she’s been brought there. Drawing inspiration from classic novels by the Brontë sisters, and twisting the genre to become something weirder and wilder, The Moors is undeniably queer and unmistakably modern.

Directed by Bryn Kennedy, the cast features Dora Award-winning theatre veteran Raquel Duffy (Soulpepper, Mirvish, Canadian Stage, Neptune Theatre, Coal Mine Theatre), Lindsey Middleton (Canadian Screen Award-nominee and Dora Award winner for Riot King’s Suddenly Last Summer, Bell Fibe TV1’s Cows Come Home), Canadian Screen Award nominee and Canadian Film Centre’s Actors Conservatory alumnus Blessing Adedijo and Erin Humphry (Coal Mine Theatre’s Breathing Corpses). Rounding out the cast are Jack Copland (Dora Award nomination for Three Ordinary Men, TV’s Total Drama Island), and Dora Award and Toronto Theatre Critics’ Award winner Heeyun Park 박희윤 (Crow’s/Mirvish Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812).

The Moors is a play that draws me in deeper every time I revisit it. I can’t wait for audiences to join us in this strange world and experience the unexpected humour, deft twists and shocking heartbreak that this play harbours. And I am thrilled to be working with Riot King, a community-minded company that has made a name for itself proving that you don’t need big resources to make a big impact.”

– Bryn Kennedy, Director
