TOFringe: The Iron Mask

From Thursday, July 3 to Sunday, July 13, 2025 – Breakaway Entertainment presents the world premiere of The Iron Mask at the 2025 Toronto Fringe Festival. A jazz-filled dance jukebox musical, it’s a bold reimagining of the classic Dumas tale. This production is presented at Theatre Passe Muraille, in partnership with the Alliance for Canadian Musicals, spotlighting new Canadian musical theatre at this year’s Fringe.

You’re invited to witness an explosive story where justice & jazz collide – & the mask must fall

Set in the smoke-choked backrooms of 1920s Toronto, where jazz and bootleg liquor flow like an untamed river, The Man in the Iron Mask is reborn as a Prohibition-era musical. A pair of twins – one, a ruthless crime lord draped in silk and sin; the other, a forgotten prisoner, shrouded in mystery and lost in the underbelly of King Street – are bound by fate and a secret buried in blood. As speakeasy ballads and brass-fueled anthems drive the tale, a band of aging gangsters, once the city’s kings, unite for one last job: a coup against tyranny. Justice and jazz collide in a high-stakes battle where the mask must fall.

This piece is packed with rich re-imaginings of music from a variety of Canadian recording artists, and a powerhouse creative team that Fringe audiences have grown to love.

A classic tale retold by an award-winning team

The Iron Mask is brought to you by the team behind Anatomy Of A Dancer, Tales Of A Cocktail and the 2024 Toronto Fringe Patron’s Pick Scenes From An Italian Restaurant. About Breakaway Entertainment

Breakaway Entertainment is a Toronto-based professional musical theatre/Broadway jazz company. They draw their inspiration from classic 1950s and 1960s performers such as Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Frank Valli and The Four Seasons, The Rat Pack and Frank Sinatra, as well as many of Broadway’s most memorable and outstanding shows (Jersey Boys, 42nd Street, Cabaret and Chicago, to name a few). This eclectic mix of timeless vintage theatre and today’s ever evolving dance world makes Breakaway Entertainment’s performances one of a kind. They offer a variety of live entertainment experiences: musical theatre jazz galas, Broadway dance revues, cabarets, classic Astaire tap dances, romantic duets and soloists – and, more recently, ventured into feature-length shows.

Five dancers, including four women and one man, stand in various poses outdoors on a concrete slab surface with a sand-coloured brick wall behind them. The women wear cocktail-length dresses of various colours that reveal their shoulders and arms. The man is dressed in black shirt and pants.
