Discover Spacing

Spacing

Spacing is a quarterly print magazine, as well as a blog, podcast and city-themed shop, uncovering Canada’s key urban issues. Examining the leading challenges faced by major Canadian cities – public transit, urban design, public art, community planning and sustainable development – Spacing highlights shared urban issues and goals, as well as successes and failures.

Conceived by a group of journalists and public space advocates who felt that there needed to be a publication that would consolidate the essential issues facing Toronto, Spacing seeks to get readers engaged in critical thinking about the role they have in shaping their everyday public spaces. Their online platform covers Vancouver and Toronto, but their website also includes archived sites featuring past articles about Edmonton, Montreal, Ottawa and the Atlantic region. And their online shop offers opportunities to learn about and celebrate Canadian cities with city-themed books, apparel, stationery and more – most notably, their popular collection of Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) subway station buttons.

What we like about this city-themed magazine

There is so much to discover about Canada’s major urban centres in Spacing. From key issues arranged by topic, to architecture, culture, film and video, history, neighbourhoods and parks, photos and more – this is your one-stop spot for all things urban Canada!

We really admire the various shapes that Spacing takes, as a print magazine, blog, podcast and an online shop. We’ve been inspired by their work for years and find Spacing to be an exceptionally gifted and important voice in the Canadian media landscape. How impressive that they’ve just celebrated their 20th anniversary! We are big fans of their shop. Their “I’m library people” collection (in support of the TPL Foundation as the Toronto Public Library’s official retail partner), the fantastic books Spacing has published over the years and their Toronto Waterways Subway Map are some of our particular favourites.
