Book*hug Press

Book*hug Press is an award-winning independent publisher specializing in contemporary literary fiction, narrative non-fiction, poetry, drama and literature in translation. Featuring the titles of both emerging and established writers, they’ve made an impact on the Canadian literary scene by publishing meaningful work that contributes to and mirrors modern-day culture and society, and challenges cultural expectations.

Valuing an equitable and inclusive publishing ecosystem, they’re committed to promoting diverse, under-represented voices, including BIPOC, LGBTQIA2S+, Deaf and disabled, and women – taking into consideration whose voices need to be heard now – and are strongly supportive of feminist writing. Guiding writers from the editing process to the book launch, they expand writers’ readership through targeted marketing outreach, and publish the work with attention to engaging design and accessible formats, including audiobooks. Among the works they have published are the novel Junie, by Chelene Knight; the poetry collection Hope Matters, by Lee Maracle, Columpa Bobb and Tania Carter; and No Credit River, a memoir in prose and poetry by Zoe Whittall. What we like about this publisher

Their unique name, for starters (there is an interesting backstory to the asterisk). Book*hug Press also brings to mind a love of books, as well as a love of authors – from both the reader’s and the publisher’s perspective. They also describe themselves as “radically optimistic,” and this really resonates with us.

We like the intimate, personal vibe of this independent publisher; and especially appreciate their commitment to promoting the diversity of contemporary voices, whether it’s an established or emerging writer. We also admire that they publish literature in translation from around the world. Go check out their books – you are certain to find something that appeals to you among their impressive list of titles. (Written by C.M.)
